Summer Major Tournament (August 17th, 2020)
The next major tournament is approaching with the Summer major Tournament that features courses from Southern Pines.
Some of you might recall them from the Easter 9-Hole Cup but there’s a small twist as holes 1, 2, 5 and 7 got an update so make sure to check my text guides below 🙂

Southern Pines Hole #1 (Par 4)

If you really want to play this one here aggressively you can go on the right side and bounce over the water but this requires overpower and a Power III ball. I’d rather recommend you to actually go on the left lane and get close to the pin in your second shot to go with the birdie here or get a lucky eagle.
For that reason play it safe on the left side with some topspin to get close to the end of the fairway and you have a good spot for your second hit.

Here’s now the updated part of this hole for the Summer Major Tournament – the green is different and actually better to play than it used to be.
You can play close to the bunker here with all sidespin to the right and you can get on the green easily, close to the pin. Getting the eagle here is not easy but still possible. Take care about the wind adjustment here to not get into the bunker!

This hole also got updated for the Summer Major Tournament, but only the green got slightly changed and this doesn’t actually affect how you play this hole. Bad news, this hole is really tough to get a hole-in-one…

You will need to make the ball roll back plus add curl so there’s no way to give you a perfect shot instruction in my text guide at all – but I can give you the best way to play this hole.
So, you want to make it bounce on the fairway and add as much sidespin to the right as you can get (try to use a ball like Katana with Side Spin III). There’s no need to add any backspin or front spin, the sidespin is enough.
When doing your shot you will use something around 50% curl to the right as well and this will land you next to the pin or maybe the hole-in-one with some luck 🙂

This Par 5 in the Summer Major Tournament is all about distance so pack the driver and the clubs with the best distance possible into your bag as well as a Power III ball.
Your drive is nothing else than doing maximum distance with full topspin and overpower to get as far as possible.
This sounds tough but as the fairway is pretty big you can’t actually mess something up here and you won’t exceed the fairway anyway so don’t be shy and give it all the distance you can in your drive while aiming to the center of the fairway.

In your second shot you will very likely be too short to bounce straight over the bunker to aim to the right side and hope that you roll onto the green.
You will do that by using maximum distance with maximum topspin plus about 50% overpower and hope for the best. Normally you can make it close to the green and have a nice chance for the eagle here.

Another tricky hole in the Eater 9-Hole Cup. In this hole you really want to get over to the right lane, no matter what the wind is doing. This will make your second shot a lot better and you don’t need to make a tricky rough bounce or anything later.
So, add all the topspin and sidespin to the right that you can get and bounce over that rough part like you can see it in the image. Also make sure to use a ball like the Titan to get additional power, with a normal ball you need to take the left lane.
If there’s additional wind from the right you want to use a good amount of curl to the right to adjust for that as well, just make sure you don’t get stuck in that bunker!

Now you can approach the pin directly and I would use some backspin and all the sidespin to the left to compensate for the sloping green so you can compensate the first bounce.
In terms of aiming you should bounce the ball so the second bounce is on the green and directly aims at the pin.
With the backspin that I recommended you won’t get too hot and if you don’t get the eagle you will still have a birdie for sure 🙂

They also updated this hole here for the Summer Major Tournament and removed the small island inside the water that you could use to bounce. I personally didn’t like that way much and rather preferred playing on the right side anyway, so there’s not much that changed here for me 🙂
Use the driver with the highest amount of curl here and you will get on the green and have your birdie with all curl and sidespin to the left.

Also here I recommend you to not risk everything to get a chance for the albatross and rather take the secure eagle by playing on the left side in the beginning.
Here you want to get as far on the fairway as possible without risking to get into the rough by adding some backspin as well and you have a good spot for your second hit.

In your second hit you will need a club with distance like the Big Dawg and use a good amount of topspin as well as all the sidespin to the right you can get.
Don’t risk playing through the trees here, this can go horribly wrong and an eagle is a solid outcome for this hole in the Summer Major Tournament! Rather use the topspin, sidespin, curl and some overpower to play around the trees and get the ball onto the green.

This hole here got completely redesigned and I found that playing this one on the right lane with the rough bump is the best way to consistently play this hole with success in the Summer Major Tournament.
You play uphill here so give the ball some topspin to get it towards the end of that fairway spot that will give you a clear path to the green in your second shot.

Now you can approach the pin but it’s not that easy with the missing ball guideline. Still, the best chance you have to get the eagle here and the birdie is a sure thing. Do the rough bump.
Use a little sidespin to the right to counter the sloping green and also add a little topspin to get the speed right. You play massively downhill here so add about 30% extra to your wind adjustment.

The Par 3 are not easy at all in the Eater 9-Hole Cup Tournament and this one is as the other ones – hard to get a hole-in-one…
The green is bumpy and slopes so play it by bouncing on the fairway as you can see in the image with a little bit of backspin and it will slope towards the pin.
The positive thing here is that even if you come in a little bit too hot you will get worst-case on the fringe next to the pin and still get your birdie.

Another hole that is all about distance and if you manage to gain enough distance in your drive you will have your eagle safe.
So, you will choose the driver with the highest distance and topspin and also use a ball that gives you power and bounce over the bunker and add all the topspin that you can.
You need to get to about the same height as the trees there so you will be able to get on the green in your second shot.

In your second shot you also have a tricky shot but this will get you on the green if you don’t mess up.
Add all the topspin and sidespin to the right and aim so you will make your first bounce on the fairway and the second one in the rough.
The plan here is to make it roll out of the rough and either get on the green, the fringe or really close to it so you can get your eagle in the next shot. Albatross is extremely difficult here so focus on getting close to the green and the pin.
